Every member of our team has a deep connection to orphans, adoption and foster care either through personal adoption experience or work in orphanages, adoption agencies, foster care or international child welfare. Our interdisciplinary clinic includes pediatric medicine, nursing, occupational/developmental therapy and family therapy.

Jennifer Chambers, MD, MPH & TM

MEDICAL DIRECTOR, PEDIATRICIAN

  • Dr. Chambers is a board certified general pediatrician. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Furman University and her M.D. and Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University. She received her post-graduate training in pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she also completed a fellowship in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. She was on faculty as an associate professor at UAB for 22 years in the division of General Academic Pediatrics. 

    She is also the founder of the original Adoption Clinic and now co-founder of The Adoption and Foster Care Clinic. Dr. Chambers has had decades of experience evaluating and treating internationally adopted children. In addition, she has worked in child welfare internationally. She and her husband have 3 daughters adopted from China. This gives Dr. Chambers the unique perspective of both the personal and professional perspectives of adoption and what it means to families and to children.

Karen Belcher, RN, CPN

CLINICAL DIRECTOR, NURSE

  • Karen completed her Nursing degree at Samford University. She went on to achieve an additional board certification in pediatrics in 1997. She is also trained as a practitioner in Trust Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI) through the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development.

    She is a 30+ year veteran pediatric nurse. Over the years, she has been involved in multiple mission projects and orphan care in Haiti, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico as well as domestic projects in Alabama and Georgia. In 2006, Karen became a single parent via adoption. Her daughter is from Guatemala. It was through this adoption process that she became more personally aware of the literacy and language needs of adoptees and foster care children. She is experienced and trained in the identification of learning disorders. Her expertise in trauma, adoption and learning disorders has helped adoptee and foster families from around the nation identify their child’s struggles and remediate their disorders.

    In 2012, Karen was selected to receive a “Living Legacy Award” from Samford University and the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing for her many contributions to pediatric healthcare and orphan ministries.

    In 2014, Karen Co-founded (along with Dr. Stephanie Denton) Alabama Game Changers in Hoover, Alabama. This 501c3 non-profit organization exists to help identify learning struggles in children and teens and to help provide a path to remediation of those struggles.

    In 2020, Karen received the Hoover “Hometown Heroes” award for community service by the Hoover Chamber of Commerce in Hoover, Alabama.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST/DEVELOPMENTAL THERAPIST

Amy Elmore, BS, OTR/L

  • Amy graduated from Medical University of South Carolina in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy. Since then she has worked in many pediatric settings including school systems, early intervention, hospitals and private practice. She has taught at the academic level for occupational therapist assistants, early intervention programs and speech therapy programs.

    She came to Birmingham from Dothan, Alabama in 1999 to pursue her interests in sensory integration and feeding therapies. She is certified in Sensory Integration Therapy and Therapeutic Listening. She has been with the Adoption Clinic since 2005 and she is involved with evaluations, treating and teaching parents about the developmental needs of their children.

    Amy performs comprehensive developmental assessments in AFCC to determine if the child is progressing at an appropriate rate. She determines if and when your child needs extra support to accomplish developmental milestones, speech needs and/or scholastic placement.

    Due to the unique needs of the children we serve, it is often difficult to decide what therapy or educational setting is best for your child. The developmental specialist will help you sort this out. She serves as an educator (on adoption and foster care) for therapists and teachers that may take part in your child’s care. She is also available to help with Individual Educational Programs should they be necessary. Language and cognitive skills are screened and additional therapy referrals are made when necessary.

Kelly Curry, LICSW-S, PIP

  • Kelly Curry is a Licensed, Board Certified Independent Clinical Social Worker and Supervisor (LICSW-S) and is certified for Private Independent Practice of Social Work (PIP) in the areas of social casework, clinical social work, community organization and social work administration in the state of Alabama. She graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work. She also has a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama.

    Since the beginning of her professional career, Kelly has been devoted in her work with vulnerable children and their families. Prior to coming to Agape of Central Alabama, Inc., Kelly was trained and worked as the Family Therapist within an interdisciplinary team of specialists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s/Children’s of Alabama Adoption Clinic and has also been involved in developing a curriculum to help youth that experienced trauma. Additionally, Kelly is a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner, a Prepare & Enrich Facilitator, and she utilizes DDP (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), ERP (Exposure/Response Prevention) and Theraplay® informed practice. Additionally, she draws from other modalities, such as TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and IFS (Internal Family Systems), in her therapeutic work.

    Most notably, Kelly has both a personal and professional passion in helping vulnerable children and she specializes in working with foster and adoptive families. Her love for this population grew early on from her own adoption experience (internationally adopted from South Korea). Since then, Kelly's passion for this population has only grown more through her work abroad and her experiences working with adoptees, children in foster care, and their families. Her clinical interests include attachment, trauma, identity, anxiety, parenting and pre-marital preparation.

    Kelly believes that therapy is a collaborative effort and that the most important component of is the relationship between the client and therapist…that the client is able to feel safe, supported and seen. She utilizes an attachment centered, non-punitive, integrative approach to provide support and practical feedback in order to help promote healing and to meet your individual therapeutic goals. Caitlin Inman, LICSW-S, PIP

CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER / THERAPIST

  • Caitlin Inman is a Licensed, Board Certified Independent Clinical Social Worker Supervisor (LICSW-S) and is certified for Private Independent Practice of Social Work (PIP) in the areas of social casework, clinical social work, community organization, and social work administration in the state of Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science degree in social work. She also has a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Alabama.

    Prior to joining The Adoption and Foster Care Clinic, Caitlin was the Director of Adoption Services at Agape of Central Alabama, Inc. as well as a Child and Family Therapist. Caitlin has also provided in-home counseling services to children and families involved with the Department of Human Resources experiencing neglect, abuse, food insecurity, and/or lack of resources. Additionally, Caitlin is a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner, Level Two Theraplay Practitioner, and utilizes DDP (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), ERP (Exposure Response Prevention), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reinstallation).

    Caitlin has both a personal and professional passion in helping vulnerable children and families, specifically, children that have experienced complex developmental trauma. Caitlin specializes in working with adoptees and their families, foster children and their families, children that have experienced trauma, and children who experience chronic dysregulation. Her love for these populations grew early on from her own experiences with adoption and foster care. She was in foster care early in her life and then domestically adopted in 1986. She also grew up with an adopted sibling and several foster siblings. She experienced firsthand, the impacts of complex developmental trauma. Since then, Caitlin's passion for vulnerable populations has only grown more through her work with adoptees, foster children, and their families. Her clinical interests include attachment, childhood trauma, parenting, marital issues, relationship issues, OCD, life transitions, and anxiety.

    In her work at The Adoption and Foster Care Clinic, Caitlin works with individuals and families of all ages to assess and treat client identified needs through therapeutic services, education, and consultation. Caitlin believes that therapy is a collaborative partnership, between the therapist and the client, that creates felt safety and fosters vulnerability and healing. She provides clients with a non-judgmental space to explore and process what they bring in with them to each session while helping them build emotional awareness and coping skills that they can carry into everyday life. When working with children and adolescents, Caitlin feels that a key point in success is parent/caregiver participation and involvement. Caitlin believes that healing happens in healthy, safe relationships, and strengthening the parent-child relationship is one of the most effective ways to create long-term positive change.

    ***As an LICSW-S,PIP, and due to her extensive experience in adoption, Caitlin is also available to support adoptive families pre and post adoption through therapeutic support, consultation and education, home study services, and post placement services.
